Little Alice Appleby
Stood beneath the apple tree.
She turned and asked her gran-pap
"Pappy, why is the tree so sad"?
Her gran-pap pondered this awhile,
Then he answered with a smile.
"Perhaps the tree is sad my dear,
'Cause no one plays in it when you're not here".

Alice loved to climb the tree
And sit real high and laugh with glee.
But when Alice had to go back home
The tree just stood there all alone.
Alice said..."Pappy, build a birdhouse, please -
The birds can play in all the leaves"
So gran-pap built a house for the birds
Just to please his little girl.

Next time Alice saw that tree
The birds were singing merrily.
All the birds now had a home
And her tree would never be alone.
Little Alice Appleby hugged her pappy
And thanked him for making her tree so happy.
As Alice and the birds played awhile
Gran-pap couldn't believe his eyes....
Alice's apple tree had a great big smile.
