She walks at night in a long black veil...

She visits a grave when the night winds wail.

Nobody knows... Nobody sees

Nobody knows but me.

Ten years ago on a cold, cold night

Someone was killed 'neath the town hall light.

There were few at the scene but they all agreed

That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me.

The judge said son, what is your alibi?

If you were somewhere else

Then you won't have to die.

I spoke not a word although it meant my life

For I had been in the arms of another man's wife.

The scaffold was high and eternity was near

She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear.

Sometimes at night, when the cold winds blow

She stands by my grave and cries soft and low.

A long time ago
On a cold winter night
I found true love
'Neath the pale moonlight.

He told me he loved me
And he would for all life
Though he knew our love was doomed
For I was another man's wife.

This boy that I loved
And wanted to be mine
Lost his life
For a strangers crime.

I didn't help him...
I didn't come to his defense.
As he stood upon that scaffold
He must've felt my love was pretense.

As his life came to an end
I couldn't shed a tear.
I wonder if he realized
How much I lived in fear.

Now I visit his grave
As the night winds howl
And I tell him I still love him
And I beg for his forgiveness somehow.

My heart has grown as cold
As the grave he sleeps within
And I cry for my love
In the cold night wind.

Sometimes at night when the cold winds blow

I stand by his grave and cry soft and low.
